About Queen’s Staircase & Fort Fincastle

The official tourism site records that the Queen’s Staircase, the “66 Steps”, was hewn out of solid limestone by enslaved people between 1793 and 1794, as a direct route from Fort Fincastle down to Nassau. The steps were later renamed for Queen Victoria. At the top, Fort Fincastle (1793) stands on Bennet’s Hill above the town and harbour.
