When to Go to the Bahamas: Weather, Seasons and Hurricanes

The Bahamas is warm all year, cooled by the trade winds. Here is how the seasons change, what hurricane season really means and which events to plan around.

Updated October 2026

Warm all year

According to the official tourism site, trade winds give The Bahamas warm weather all year: winter lows average about 70°F (21°C) and summer highs range from 80 to 90°F (26 to 32°C).

Casual summer clothes work in any month, but bring a jacket or sweater for the cooler evenings from December to February. Many hotels, restaurants and casinos in Nassau, Paradise Island and Freeport expect men to wear jackets at night.

Rain comes and goes

Rain can fall in any month, which is why the islands are so green, but squalls and thunder showers usually pass quickly. May and June typically have the most rain.

Hurricane season

Hurricane season runs from June through November. The Ministry of Tourism publishes storm updates on bahamas.com, and the official advice is not to cancel too early, because forecasts change; many hotels have hurricane cancellation policies that give a full refund if a storm disrupts your stay.

If you travel in these months, take insurance that covers cancellation and medical evacuation, keep an eye on the forecast and leave slack in your plans for flights and ferries.

Busy times and big events

Spring Break runs from late February to mid-April, worth knowing whether you want to join in or avoid it. The biggest cultural event is Junkanoo, with parades on Bay Street on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, and Christmas and New Year are high season, so book early.

In June, Cat Island holds its Rake & Scrape Festival, and Junkanoo is celebrated again on Independence Day, 10 July, and at summer festivals.

Travel notes for 2026–27

Southern Air reports that Governor’s Harbour airport on Eleuthera closes from 1 October 2026 for a few months; use North Eleuthera or Rock Sound instead.
